Ballad 3 (Jamaica ’59) references the anti-immigration policy and discussion that has plagued UK politics, through the lens of my own white privilege but also the fact that I wouldn’t exist without immigration. My grandma came over to England from Jamaica in 1959 to become a nurse.
For my book recommendation on this one, whilst set a bit earlier than my own family history, I wanted to suggest Small Island by Andrea Levy. It is both a disturbing and a witty read, and I love the different perspectives you get through the book’s format (although Bernard’s sections can be difficult).
I had wanted some other books to go with this release, but so far I’ve not found anything else quite right. If anyone has any ideas, please share your recommendations!
